My Love Affair With The Bike

by Steven H. Nye, Ph.D.

I spend a lot of time riding my two beloved bicycles. So much so, that the other day my wife asked me if there was another woman in my life. I simply replied “Yes, my Felt F2 Superlight and she’s a real beauty!” My love affair with cycling started during my graduate school years at Northwestern University as a healthy way to destress from the rigors of science. It has continued ever since and soon I will pass 100,000 miles. It’s been a long journey and I’ve loved every moment. Some people love fine wine or traveling to exotic places or even high-end cars. I’m drawn instead to the seamless shifting of my Dura-Ace components and the beautiful countryside found near my home north of Milwaukee. With age and injury, my rides have become slower, but much longer. It’s OK. This gives me the opportunity to see much more, especially the changing landscapes as the seasons pass by.

I never listen to music or podcasts when I’m on the bike. It’s a safety issue. Instead I’m in the moment thinking about my life, my family, my friends and current events like pandemics and civil protests. And, rolling down a long hill, on my “dream machine” with the wind at my back, usually leads to new ideas or creative solutions for my wellness company, VaxPro. As an added bonus, I am lucky enough to commute to the office each day. All in all, being on the bike is fun, challenging and healthy.
